Finding Jobs in Netherlands

The Netherlands, a country in northwestern Europe, is known for its flat landscape, canals, tulip fields, windmills and cycling routes and it’s capital is Amsterdam.

History / Basics

Amsterdam, the capital, is home to the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, the house where Jewish diarist Anne Frank hid during WWII and a
red light district. Canalside mansions and a trove of works from artists including Rembrandt and Vermeer remain from the 17th-century
“Golden Age.”

The Netherlands has the highest population density (493 inhabitants per square km – water excluded) of any European country with over 1
million inhabitants. Worldwide, only Bangladesh and Taiwan, among major countries, have a higher density of population.

New York City started as Dutch colony called New Amsterdam. Many places names in New York remind of the Dutch origins of the city, such
as Flushing in Queens (famous for Flushing Meadows), named after Flushing in the Dutch province of Zeeland.

The Dutch United Provinces declared their independence from Spain in 1579; during the 17th century, they became a leading seafaring and
commercial power, with settlements and colonies around the world. After a 20-year French occupation, a Kingdom of the Netherlands was
formed in 1815.

This article describes the European part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Caribbean islands BonaireSint Eustatius and Saba are “special municipalities” fully integrated in the Netherlands proper. Beside the Netherlands proper, ArubaCuraçao and Sint Maarten are constituent countries within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Do I need a work permit?

Citizens of EU/EEA member states and Switzerland do not need residence permits or work permits, except those from newer EU member Croatia, whose citizens need a work permit for their first year and ‘proof of lawful residence’ permit until restrictions are lifted. Croatian citizens cannot apply for the single permit.
Everybody else who wants to come and work in the Netherlands will need a TWV work permit (tewerkstellingsvergunning) in their name. Some nationalies will also need an MVV for entering the Netherlands; find out if you need an entry visa as well: guide to provisional residence permits (MVV) and temporary residence permits.
Certain employers can also register with the IND to become sponsors for foreign workers. You can see the IND’s list of recognised sponsors.
